Bret Harte's Accelerated Reader Program

For many of you, Accelerated Reader is an old friend, but for those of you that have not had the experience yet, let me explain what it is. Accelerated Reader is a program meant to increase reading comprehension. Each student is tested for a reading level. They are then assigned a 'ZPD' range--you really don't want to know what 'ZPD' stands for do you? This means that they will be reading books that are not too hard, but not to easy. After completing their book--reading slowly and carefully for detail, they will take a computer test. They need an 80 percent score to pass. They are then awarded points according to their score. Each student is assigned a certain number of points per six-week period. The good new is--if a child does not pass a test, he can read another book and still gain enough points to make up for the loss.
