"Time-In" is a program that provides one on one mentoring with at-risk middle school students. The children are identified as "at-risk" mostly do to ongoing poor academics or behavioral problems. However the underlying cause is usually due to a variety of reasons, from just needing a good role model to more serious issues at home. Some may have learning disabilities and are RSP students. It's important to know that these children want to be in the program and are looking for a little additional help.
Mentors are adult volunteers who listen - He or she is additional support for a child who may have more challenges than usual. This is not counseling - your time together is primarily student directed. In the Time-In Room there are games and activities that you can do together. During school hours we have access to The Spot - where you can play pool or table tennis.
The time commitment per week is small: Meetings are during the school day for just one class period - about 50 minutes. Commitment on the part of mentors is vital: Consistency and reliability are very important to these kids.
All Mentors must be fingerprinted with SJUSD and TB Tested (costs associated with this will be reimbursed).
If this is something you would like to do - and I can't stress enough how really rewarding this program is – please contact me ( TimeIn0809@BretHarte.net) so that we can discuss the program more in depth.
Thank you!
